Movers v. Shakers: #TRIADvances is Gamified

This year there’s an added element of competition in the #TRIADvances program

Competition can bring out the best in us, and that’s the same when it comes to integrating tech in our classrooms. Unfortunately, it also can cause trepidation and extra pressure, and that can be detrimental to the progress we’re trying to foster. So, we found the best of both worlds.

We broke the entire district up into two groups:

  • The Movers: staff at Silver Creek, St. Jacob, and Triad Middle School
  • The Shakers: staff at Henning, Marine and Triad High School

We then created a formula that rewards each group for being involved, for using unique apps and tools, and for striving to reach levels 2 and 3 of our badge system. Here’s our formula (you math teachers will love this):

(We then multiply the whole thing by 100 and round up to make the numbers easy to compare.) As each badge is earned, the competition grows! The chart at the top of this page shows the most recently updated results. It is a chart from a Google Sheet, and it updates automatically as soon as a badge is approved. So, that’s the most recent number!

Tell them what they’ve won!

At the end of each quarter, the team with the highest total is the winner. We then put the names of all of the people on that team who earned badges in a hat. The number of total levels earned determines how many times a person’s name goes in the hat. For example, if they earned two Level 2’s and a Level 3, their name is put in seven times.

Then, on a designated day, we will draw the winning name on camera and announce the winner. That person will then win something totally awesome! After that, the competition is cleared and we start all over for the next quarter.

Good luck to both teams, and remember to keep #TRIADvancing!
